Thanks to many convenient elements, despite the traditional psychology “respect agriculture – choke trade” of Vietnamese feudal society, trading and commercial activities appeared rather early in Hội An. It played an important role in forming a famous international commercial port-town of Việt Nam during Mid-Modern period in the SouthEast Asia and the world.
Silk, acera and tobacco were carried by boats
The reputation of trade in Hội An was known everywhere.
The people of Quảng region – Đàng Trong sang like that and many historians and merchants at that time had similar comment on the trade in Hội An. The domestic and foreign trade precisely took Hội An commercial port-town to the role of an international sailboat port-town representing Đàng Trong-Việt Nam. Hội An was also a place that welcomed many foreign merchant boats whose masts made quite “a forest of arrows”. Their products were so abundant, “everything was ready” that “ even one hundred large junks would not be sufficient to load them all at one time”.
Especially, here, prices are fixed, trade is easy, taxes are light and custom is good. All attract everyone from distant lands to come and settle down and build their life.
